Sober Living vs. Residential Treatment

These terms can sound similar, but housing and clinical treatment are different services. The key questions are what the operator actually provides, how it is overseen and which claims you can independently verify.

What sober living usually means

A sober living or recovery residence generally offers alcohol- and drug-free housing with community expectations and peer support. California DHCS explains that residences which do not offer licensable alcohol or drug treatment services generally do not require a DHCS residential treatment license. Local rules and other applicable obligations may still apply.

What licensed residential treatment means

California DHCS licenses adult residential nonmedical substance-use treatment programs when licensable recovery or treatment services are offered. Examples identified by DHCS include detoxification, individual or group treatment sessions, educational sessions and treatment or recovery planning. Check the specific site's services and license, not just the organization name.

How transitional housing fits

Transitional housing is a broad description of a temporary or step-down housing arrangement; the label alone does not establish clinical treatment, a recovery-residence support level, a particular time limit or a DHCS license. Ask the operator what housing, supervision and services it actually provides.

A side-by-side due diligence framework

When comparing options, record the service being offered, issuing authority or certification body, operator-managed house rules, staffing or peer support, published costs, transportation access and actual point of contact. A voluntary recovery-residence certification is not the same thing as government licensing for treatment.

  • For a treatment claim, verify the exact DHCS record and current service category.
  • For a recovery-residence certification claim, consult the issuing certification organization directly.

Who decides which environment is appropriate?

A public guide cannot determine whether a particular person needs clinical treatment, supervised recovery supports or ordinary alcohol- and drug-free housing. The individual and their qualified care team should make care decisions using current information; the housing operator should clarify its property and business policies.

What the Welcome Home Bridge site provides now

This website offers nonclinical educational materials and links to public information sources. It does not admit people to a program, direct referrals, confirm an open bed, evaluate medical needs or exchange discharge records. Future protected coordination software remains separately gated.
