Sober Living House Rules: What to Ask
House rules shape daily life in recovery housing. Compare the actual written agreement, the way policies are explained and how questions or grievances are handled—not simply a claim that a home is strict or supportive.
Request the actual written handbook or agreement
Ask for the current resident handbook, participation expectations, payment and refund terms, any resident agreement and a clear description of who applies and reviews the policies. SAMHSA recommends easy-to-read written policies and an orientation process rather than relying only on verbal instructions.
Clarify schedules, guests and household responsibilities
Compare curfew practices, shared chores, quiet hours, guest policies, meeting expectations, employment or education expectations, and consequences for breaking stated rules. A residence's general expectations should be explained before anyone commits; a public guide does not determine whether a rule is lawful or appropriate for an individual.
Ask how personal property, medication and privacy are addressed
Ask the operator to explain its general policies on privacy, personal possessions, storage, finances and resident communications. Do not disclose anyone's medication list or diagnosis to this public website. Questions involving medical treatment or medication needs belong with qualified professionals and the operator's authorized process.
Understand grievance and dispute procedures
SAMHSA highlights clear resident rights and a way to submit and resolve grievances. Request the written process, who receives complaints, whether concerns can be escalated and what retaliation safeguards or outside oversight channels apply. If a current resident reports immediate danger, seek appropriate local help rather than submitting sensitive details here.
Ask about recurrence-of-use and departure policies
Request the written policy for a recurrence of substance use, temporary absences, safety events, termination, belongings, move-out notices and refunds. Understand who makes decisions, what assistance or external referrals may be offered and how the policy avoids misleading promises. Do not treat a house policy as medical advice.
Confirm the level of support actually provided
A peer-run residence may operate differently from a monitored or supervised environment. Check whether staff, peer leadership or contracted professionals are involved and verify any specific certification or treatment license claim with its issuing organization. Do not presume all residences provide clinical services.
Compare policies with the housing budget and practical needs
Written rules should be considered alongside costs, transportation, accessibility and personal preferences. Keep a dated comparison based on the operator's documents; there is no universal house rulebook that applies to every property.
